Flexgate is the name many people use for MacBook Pro faults where the display cable, backlight or display module fails after many lid openings and closings. Typical signs are stage-lighting along the lower edge, flickering, an image that disappears at a certain angle, or a display that only works when the lid is almost closed.
Stop as soon as the image changes when you move the lid. Do not open and close the machine repeatedly to test it, and do not press on the display edge. Each movement can tear the cable or backlight traces further. If the files matter, back up while the screen still works, or bring the Mac to EasyPC for a diagnosis.
Identify the exact MacBook model first
Choose Apple menu > About This Mac for the model name and serial number. If the Mac does not start normally, hold Option while choosing Apple menu > System Information, or read the serial number on the underside. The serial number can be checked on Apple’s Check Coverage page for model and possible Apple coverage.
Flexgate is especially associated with 2016-2017 MacBook Pro models, including A1706, A1707 and A1708. Similar symptoms can appear on other generations too. Model year, screen size, Touch Bar/non-Touch Bar and model identifier are therefore important before ordering a display or cable repair.
Separate display cable from logic board and software
Connect an external display with the correct USB-C/HDMI adapter. If the external display is stable while the built-in display flickers, turns off or shows stage-lighting, the fault points more toward the display, backlight or cable than graphics or logic board. If the external display also fails, the logic board, power and software need assessment.
If the display is black but the Mac otherwise starts, shine a phone light across the screen. If you can see a faint image, the backlight may be gone. If there is no image at all, it can still be the display cable, panel, T-CON/display module or logic board. Do not format or reinstall macOS for an angle-dependent display fault.
Check Apple coverage and diagnostics without risking data
Before paying for repair, check the serial number and possible Apple coverage, especially if the machine may once have been covered by a service programme. Terms can change or expire, so check current status with Apple or an authorized workshop before assuming the repair is covered.
Apple Diagnostics can be used if you suspect hardware failure. On Apple silicon, hold the power button until startup options appear, then press Command-D. On Intel Macs, hold D at startup, or Option-D. In macOS Tahoe 26 and later, the test can also ask you to choose a specific part, such as display, keyboard or trackpad. Diagnostics can provide useful reference codes, but a flex cable that only fails at one angle is not always caught.
Protect files before the display fails completely
If the display still works at one angle, use that time for backup. Connect an external display, connect power, and copy important files or use Time Machine. Also confirm the FileVault password and Apple ID before repair. On newer Macs, data can be hard to recover if the machine later stops starting.
If Time Machine asks to erase an external drive, that means the drive is being prepared as a backup disk. Do not choose a drive that contains the only copy of files you want to keep. If you choose encrypted backup, store the password safely; without it, the backup can be unusable when you need to restore.
Do not remove the display or pull display cables without a model guide and the right tools. Display cables, Wi-Fi antennas, battery, Touch Bar cables and logic board sit close together on many models. Poor disassembly can turn a display repair into a logic board repair.
Repair: display replacement or cable work?
On some MacBooks, a complete display assembly is the cleanest solution. On others, targeted cable or backlight repair can be considered if the symptom, model and damage fit. The right path depends on model, part price, cosmetic condition, battery, keyboard, liquid history and whether the logic board is otherwise healthy.
If the MacBook otherwise works well, repair can be worth it. If the battery is swollen, the keyboard is failing, the logic board has liquid damage, or the machine no longer supports the software you need, the total value should be assessed before paying for display work.
