A MacBook screen can be physically cracked, show lines, flicker, lose backlight or stay completely black. Before ordering a display, separate the display assembly, display cable, backlight, hinge area, graphics, power and macOS startup. The symptoms can look similar, but the next step is different.

Stop normal testing if the Mac had liquid damage, smells burnt, has a swollen battery, has a bent lid or chassis, or contains important files without backup. A free diagnosis is safer than opening the lid further, forcing hinges, reinstalling macOS or buying a display by guesswork.

1. Place the symptom correctly

Cracked glass or LCD, ink-like marks, colored lines after pressure, dark areas and image that changes when you move the lid often point toward the display assembly, display cable or hinge area. If keyboard backlight, sound and charging work normally but the internal display is dark, display repair is more likely.

If the Mac does not react to the power button, shows no charging signs, gets warm without image, restarts repeatedly, shows the Apple logo and stops, or also gives no image on an external display, do not order a screen yet. The fault can be power, storage, macOS, graphics, logic board or a shorted component.

2. Test an external display without making it worse

Connect an external monitor or TV directly to the Mac with HDMI, Thunderbolt or USB-C. Use the correct cable or adapter, power the display, choose the correct display input and preferably test without a hub or dock first. Apple recommends connecting the display directly to the Mac if an external display is dark or not detected.

If the external display works, go to Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. Check resolution, brightness and whether multiple displays are detected. If the display is not detected, hold Option in Displays to show Detect Displays. On Apple silicon, the Mac can also ask you to allow the display accessory to connect.

The result matters: stable image on an external display points toward the internal display, display cable, backlight or lid/hinge area. No image on an external display means the machine should be diagnosed before a display is ordered. If the image only disappears at certain lid angles, note the angle and do not keep bending the lid back and forth to test more.

3. If the Mac starts to a black screen

Apple explains that a black, gray or blue blank screen can appear during normal startup, but if the Mac seems turned on and stays blank, hold the power button for up to 10 seconds until it turns off, then turn it on again. On a MacBook with Touch ID, the Touch ID button is also the power button.

If you get image in macOS Recovery, the display is not necessarily physically defective. On Apple silicon, hold the power button until startup options appear and choose Options. On Intel, hold Command-R during startup. Disk Utility > First Aid can repair drive errors, but Apple recommends backup before disk repair. Do not erase the drive or reinstall macOS before data and FileVault are understood.

Apple Diagnostics can help when you suspect hardware: disconnect unnecessary accessories, connect the charger and make sure there is good ventilation. On Apple silicon, hold the power button until Options appears and press Command-D. On Intel, hold D during startup, or Option-D. In macOS Tahoe 26 and later, the test can also ask you to choose a specific part, such as display, keyboard or trackpad. Write down reference codes, but remember that no code does not prove the display cable or panel is healthy.

4. The right model is critical for price and parts

MacBook display price varies widely between Air, Pro, size, year, color and generation. Find the model name through Apple menu > About This Mac if the screen is still readable, or send the serial/model number from the underside, box or receipt. Take photos of the damage, hinges and lid corners.

Do not order a part from screen size alone. Two MacBooks with the same size can have different panels, colors, lids, cameras, cables, mounting points and generations. If the lid is bent, hinges are tight or the chassis is crooked, the mechanics must be assessed before replacement, otherwise a new display can be damaged again.

5. Backup, FileVault and data before repair

If you get image on an external display, back up before repair. Use Time Machine through System Settings > General > Time Machine, or copy the most important documents, photos and project folders to an external drive or cloud storage. Confirm that the latest backup is actually recent.

If Time Machine asks to erase an external drive, that means the drive is being prepared as a backup disk. Do not choose a drive that contains the only copy of files you want to keep. If you choose encrypted backup, store the password safely; without it, the backup can be unusable when you need to restore.

Check FileVault under System Settings > Privacy & Security > FileVault. If FileVault is on, the password, Apple Account or recovery key must be under control before service or file transfer. If the files matter and the screen is completely black, a free diagnosis is safer than guessing through menus you cannot see.

6. When EasyPC should see the machine first

Bring the MacBook in for a free diagnosis if an external display shows no image, the lid or hinges are bent, image comes and goes when the lid moves, the machine has liquid damage, the battery is swollen, FileVault or backup is unclear, or you do not know whether screen replacement is worth it.

During diagnosis, we check model, display part, lid, hinges, display cable, backlight, external display, power, battery, liquid indicators and whether data should be protected first. You receive a price before further repair, and we tell you if a new display does not make sense compared with age, part price or other faults.
